Congratulations to the entire ONAP community and extended ecosystem on the availability of ONAP Frankfurt. Thanks to your incredible contribution that you put forth every day, we are making a major difference across the Industry! It is already our 6th Release!
I remember reading the first press releases in February 2017, seeking for the initial reactions from the world, after releasing the open source version of ECOMP (Enhanced Control Orchestration, Management and Policy) under the Linux Foundation’s umbrella.
Where are we three years later?
We have succeeded to build a very diverse and engaged community, composed of carriers, vendors and cloud providers, enabling more than 70 percent of the world’s mobile subscribers. Four End User Operators are currently in the Top 10 of code contributors.
We continually increase the ONAP adoption; eighteen service providers gave an update about their deployment plan regarding the Frankfurt release. The commercial ecosystem has been significantly extended. Thirty-Two vendors shared their latest contributions and services developed on top of ONAP.
Following the principle “from Specification to Code”, we are closely working with Standards Developing Organizations (SDOs) such as ETSI, TM Forum, MEF, 3GPP, O-RAN Alliance. Conceived with standard group harmonization at its core, Frankfurt advances alignment with ETSI (SOL002, SOL005), 3GPP (5G Network Slicing), and O-RAN Software Community (A1 Adapter).
We have developed several Blueprints (Virtual CPE, VoLTE, Cross Domain and Cross Layer VPN, Broadband Services, 5G etc.). Frankfurt introduces end-to-end network slicing with modeling and orchestration of a network slice and Multi-Domain Optical Network Service (MDONS).
We have a robust Quality Gating approach increasing the velocity and the stability of our ONAP Deployment (Up to 30 Daily ONAP Installations; 70K+ automated Test Suites including pro-active security checks, 4 Cloud Environments provided by Carriers/Vendors, etc.).
Several companies are exploring/innovating together upfront of the next official release (Service Mesh, TOSCA Control Loop, Model Driven Radio Access Network (RAN) Configuration Management, etc.).
We have setup several ONAP Cloud Native Task Forces to assess and to implement ONAP value propositions (NF control loops, NF common inventory, NF common data collection and analytics, etc.), complementing the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) landscape in alignment with the CNF standards. The ONAP Frankfurt release supports the ability for ONAP to be deployed in any Kubernetes-as-a-Service (KaaS) environment, complex CNFs and CNAs, including provider networks and multiple virtual networks per cluster, that span across multiple K8s clouds.
What can we conclude?
ONAP is successfully established to be the de facto industry standard for NFV/SDN automation, providing a comprehensive platform for real-time, policy-driven orchestration and automation of physical and virtual network functions that will enable software, network, IT and cloud providers and developers to rapidly automate new services and support complete lifecycle management – faster than any one product could on its own.
Key stakeholder to accelerate 5G deployment, ONAP is now on the right path for its Cloud Native Journey.

The next ONAP release, ‘Guilin,’ is planned for 2H of 2020. The ONAP Technical Steering Committee is in the final stages of prioritizing the use cases and the requirements submitted by the ONAP Community. This release will further increase the support for 5G in areas of network slicing and O-RAN integration, ETSI (e.g. SOL007) and 3GPP standards, as well as the cloud native journey including deeper integration with K8s.
The next Virtual LFN Developer & Testing Forum will take place June 22-25, 2020. The CNTT/OPNFV, ONAP, OpenDaylight, and Tungsten Fabric communities will be participating.
